The problem is expressed in the title: Fan doesn’t rotate on Apalis iMX8 Embedded Vision Starter Kit.

Does it mean that board isn’t functional at 100%.

Dear Pavel, please, update Toradex Easy Installer in Apalis iMX8 to the latest nightly build as shown in the other post and make sure that the fan is correctly connected to the X6 connection of the Ixora carrier board. Kindly share a photo of your carrier board setup if possible.

Dear Pavel, as mentioned in the other post, this “Nightly” build of Toradex Easy Installer is available in the CI feeds of Toradex Easy Installer. It is not available offline.

I’m aware that you are facing issues with the HDMI display while using Toradex Easy Installer, making it hard to navigate. Can you use the VCN / RDP method to connect to the modules graphical interface to be able to connect it directly from your PC? If you are having connection issues, you should be using the micro usb connection to the PC (Remember to remove JP2). You can confirm that the connection is working by seeing an IP under USB RNDIS. This method is described here:

I believe that for Apalis iMX8 and Toradex Easy Installer 2.0b4 20191231, you should be using RDP. That should make it easier to navigate through the long list of Toradex Easy Installer under the CI feed.

  • I booted from SD card with the Toradex Easy Installer that I downloaded from TEI page
  • JP2 is out
  • display is connected and here is what I see on it:

Dear Pavel, please try an RDP viewer rather than VNC viewer. Good news is that I see that the board gets an IP through USB RNDIS.

Noted. Let’s see if updating Toradex Easy Installer solves the issue. There a few things we can try then.

Once you get RDP client working, activate the 3rd checkbox in the feeds, wait for it to load and look for Toradex Easy Installer 2.0b4 (20200507)

The radiator is quite hot.

Should I stop using the card until the fan issue is resolved ?

That is expected if the fan is not spinning. The board have failsafes to prevent that it overheats and kills itself like speed throttling and ultimately, emergency shutdown. So there is a chance that the board goes slower, but it will simply turn off if it gets too hot. What you can do is to try to keep it ON the least amount of possible (not leaving it idle too much).

If possible, check the voltages on the X6 connector of the fan, please.

Assuming that BLACK is GND, the both voltages BLACK-RED and BLACK-YELLOW are 0.

Once wfreerdp.exe is launced, nothing happens.
On Ubuntu other problem: I installed freerdp-x11, but cannot launch it:
freerdp-x11: command not found

Dear Pavel, you are asking something that is beyond with which can help you which is the use of an external RDP viewer… You don’t get any output with

xfreerdp /cert-ignore /sec:tls /v:192.168.11.1

Can you please try with another RDP Viewer (Remmina worked fine for me but needs some configuration).

Another observation: I didn’t touch the Toradex Easy Installer window and since about hour I don’t see any perturbations with network: both Ethernet and USB RNDIS constantly display addresses.

Yes, on Ubuntu it seems working, but connection failed:

Then try activating the 3rd checkbox on the feeds directly on the board with a connected mouse and the HDMI display… And try to install Toradex Easy Installer 2.0b4 (20200507) from there.

Once I checked 3rd box and then refresh, I could see updated list for about 10 … 15 sec, and that the screen was transformed in this:

As I could catch the screen (for these seconds it was available) I didn’t see the Toradex Installer version that looked like 20200705 … at least on the top of the screen

However, can you try if the fan works in the Embedded Linux Console image? Additionally, I recommend having a serial connection (it is likely that you would need to run some commands through there).

No, it didn’t rotate while I was running Embedded Linux Console image.
As I remember the fan failure occurred after I first time installed image. Unfortunately my choice was version of Toradex Easy Installer … I don’t remember which one … probably the one, that appears when I boot from SD card.
After that I tried two other images Embedded Linux Console image and Toradex with Containers (I’m not sure that it’s the exact name). In both cases fan didn’t rotate.

serial connection (it is likely that
you would need to run some commands
through there).

Well I can do it using cables and adapters that you provided in the box. But taking into account unresolved fan failure, what can I do with serial connection ? Probably once fan failure resolved in some way I could try something, isn’t it ?

BTW if it’s necessary to check some dynamical signals I can also do it, as I have quite rapid logical analyzer (not oscilloscope)
