Ixora V1.2A power current capacity on X4

Hi,
According to the Ixora data sheet the “Power Out Header (X4)” provides up to 5V / 6A and 3.3V / 8A. Does this include the Apalis module? How much power can be drawn for external components at pin 1 and pin 3? According to this older post the X4 pin 5 trace has a width of 1.2mm which is not that much. Maybe this changed in the new hardware revision? We would need at least 2A at each supply pin.
Regards

which version of the IXORA do you have?

Matthias Gohlke

Hi @matthias.tx
We are going to use the V1.2A (but we have all revision here for testing).

Hello qojote,

The 5 Volt / 6A and 3.3 Volt / 8A are the max output of the DC/DC converters. So this is the power budget for the SOM and peripherals. The SOM is powered from the 3.3V rail. I need to check back with R&D how much the pins are rated for.

You can take a look at the IXORA schematic here: Ixora Carrier Board | Toradex Developer Center

Matthias

Hi @matthias.tx,
Is there an estimation how much current can be drawn by external components, e.g. is there a specification about the maximum current consumption of the Apalis iMX6Q and the Ixora board itself (CAN transceiver, etc)? Additionally, are the power traces designed to carry such high currents?

Hello qojote,

this is very software use case dependent. So the IXORA 1.2A is designed to support the most power hungry IMX8QM SOC with 20W peak and still have some headroom for the peripherals.
The IMX6Q is not that power-hungry 15W peak but you should do your own use case-specific tests.

Matthias

Hello qojote,

you find the data about the load capabilities in the datasheet on page 35 section 4.1.
