We are pleased to announce the TorizonCore 5.6.0 quarterly release for Toradex's System on Modules.

TorizonCore is our operating system that powers Torizon, a DevOps platform that simplifies the development and maintenance of embedded Linux software. TorizonCore is designed to be used out-of-the-box on devices requiring high reliability, allowing you to focus on your application instead of on building and maintaining an operating system.

Torizon uses software containers, making it simple to add functionality to your system in a way that is both secure and easy to maintain. Torizon supports hardware acceleration in containers and graphical user interfaces.

This release includes all updates from the previous 5.x.y TorizonCore releases.

Updates and Highlights

TorizonCore

• Create the infrastructure to enable provisioning at scale
  Toradex is designing an implementation to allow the automatic provisioning of multiple devices in production (A.k.a. provisioning at scale). This update adds the necessary software infrastructure on TorizonCore.
  When provisioning at scale is fully implemented, Toradex will provide documentation on how to use it.
  
• New plugin added to NetworkManager
   The "ifupdown" plugin for NetworkManager is included in TorizonCore and disabled by default.
• Dockerfile lint applied to TorizonCore Debian package repositories
  Toradex has adopted hadolint as a linter tool. We recommend the use of a linter for developers writing their own Dockerfiles.

• Update of TorizonCore packages
  The following packages have been updated:
  
  • Fluent-bit update to 1.8.12
  • Common updated to 2.1.0
  • FUSE overlay updated to 1.8.12
• Device drivers included as a module:
  
  • Enable support for the NXP PCF2127/29 Real-time Clock (RTC)
  • Enable support for the Micro Crystal RV8803 Real-time Clock (RTC)
  • Enable support for Rotary encoders connected to GPIO pins

Debian Packages and Containers

• Docker Containers rebuilt against the Debian Bullseye stable release
  Toradex periodically rebuilds our Docker images against Bullseye stable feeds. This quarter, all the Debian Containers for Torizon were updated, except the kiosk-mode-browser container.
  
• Portainer updated from 2.9.3 to 2.11.1
  Portainer is a user-friendly GUI for managing containers. This update does not have a significant impact on TorizonCore users.

Other Updates

• Several bug fixes
  Browse through cumulative bug fixes from 5.6.0-devel-202202, 5.6.0-devel-202203, and 5.6.0.
  Highlighted bug fix:
  • Unable to remote access the device via VNC/RDP after running a Qt framebuffer test
  • Persistent logging no longer works

Hardware Support

A quarterly release is intended to be used in a production environment only with volume products, as long as they are supported by TorizonCore.

• Volume products: Apalis iMX6, Colibri iMX6DL, Colibri iMX7D 1GB
  This release is intended to be used in production on these modules.
  
• Sample products: Apalis iMX8, Colibri iMX8X, Verdin iMX8M Mini, Verdin iMX8M Plus
  Due to the hardware status of samples, this release is intended for development.
  For Verdin, only the second generation of Verdin products is supported.
  
• Experimental: Experimental support for NAND-based SoMs was dropped.
