Toradex is excited to announce the launch of our new SMARC System on Module (SoM) Family. Our mission has always been to deliver high-quality, reliable, and easy-to-use embedded solutions, and now we’re bringing these core values to the SMARC ecosystem.

Why are we launching this new family?
We understand that some companies require SMARC for their projects. We want to ensure that these companies can also benefit from the excellent solutions Toradex continues to deliver for over 21 years now, based on our in-house SoM families. Whether you are starting a new project or looking for a second source for purchasing, our SMARC family offers reliability, security, and industry-leading Linux software support.

  • SMARC iMX8M Plus: Combining proven machine learning capabilities with power efficiency. The SMARC i.MX 8M Plus is also ideal for companies already using i.MX 6, 7 and 8 SMARC-based designs as it allows a seamless upgrade path. The i.MX 8M Plus provides a rapid path to production with proven SoC and Software support.
  • SMARC iMX95: In close collaboration with NXP, Toradex was the first to bring an i.MX 95 Evaluation Kit, featured as the Verdin i.MX 95 EVK to market. We are now introducing the SMARC iMX95 System on Module as another production path for our customers!
It boasts cutting-edge performance, state-of-the-art machine learning capabilities, and advanced connectivity options, including support for up to 8 cameras

These first two members of our SMARC System on Module family are available by the end of Q1’2025; you'll get to see them at our booth at the 2025 Embedded World in Nuremberg. Make sure to stop by to see for yourself!

However, this is just the beginning. Our SMARC roadmap already includes plans to expand the family further, ensuring we can meet diverse customer and application needs with future-proof solutions.

Why Choose Toradex SMARC?

The Toradex SMARC family brings the well-known Toradex quality, reliability, and ease of use to the SMARC ecosystem. By choosing a Toradex SMARC System on Module, you immediately tap into:

  • Proven Quality and Reliability: Toradex SoMs are built to last, with rigorous testing and a commitment to high-quality standards.
  • Excellent Linux Support including OTA and Remote Access: Toradex provides best-in-class Linux support, including long-term support (LTS) and focusing on Mainline First. Our Torizon embedded Linux based on Yocto Project has integrated Over the Air (OTA) Updates, Device Monitoring, and Remote Updates for easy troubleshooting.
  • Thoroughly Tested Software Releases: We test our software releases everyday, on the same exact hardware you will be using, and share the results publicly. Our integration efforts ensure a great developer experience and peace of mind for you.
  • Free Maintenance - Low Total Cost: We commit to maintaining and offering our SoMs with long product lifecycles of 10-15 years and the software even up to 20 years, lowering your maintenance cost and risks significantly.
  • Proven supply chain: Enjoy peace of mind with our proven deliverability records, even in the face of setbacks.
  • Industry-Leading Customer Support: From online documentation to one-on-one assistance, we help you succeed every step of the way with our great developer resources and best-in-class customer support.
  • Easier Compliance with EU Cyber Resilience Act (CRA) and other standards: Our robust software and security features facilitate the process of meeting modern cybersecurity regulations, like the EU Cyber Resilience Act.

If SMARC is a requirement for your project, our solutions are the natural choice for reliability, performance, and peace of mind.

Simple Migration Process

Do you already have a SMARC-based product in production and would like to leverage Toradex's unique offerings to lower your Total Cost of Ownership and obtain better supply-chain security? Transitioning to Toradex SMARC is designed to be as seamless as possible, with maximum compatibility to minimize adaptation efforts.

Typical Migration Effort

From the same SoC

2 weeks

From other ARM SoC

4 weeks

From x86 SoC

8 weeks

Request a free compatibility check to estimate the effort required for transitioning to Toradex SMARC. On the software side, our full-stack offerings facilitate the migration of your existing Linux software, or even a migration from Windows to Linux. Overall, after migration, you'll benefit from more reliable hardware, industry-leading customer support, and a secure Linux software stack ready to comply with cybersecurity regulations. This includes essential features like Secure Boot, OTA Updates, Remote Access, Device Management and more.

And if you’d rather let us handle it, our Solutions team provides end-to-end services to do all the heavy lifting for you!
This even includes moving your existing SMARC design to another cost effective Toradex System on Modules family or a fully integrated Single Board Computer (SBC) design.

Is SMARC for You?

Being a standard designed to accommodate a wide range of ARM and x86 Systems on Chip, SMARC made tradeoffs to prioritize broad compatibility over cost, size, and performance. If the broad compatibility and the second source are not the top priority, our other SoM families are typically the better product fit.

SMARC
Wider Range of x86/ARM SoCs

SMARC supports many ARM and x86 SoCs. SMARC System on Modules are available from a wide range of vendors.

Optimized for Compatibility

SMARC, with its broad standard, is designed to accommodate a wide range of use cases, supporting both ARM and x86 chips. This versatility means it may not be as finely tuned for specific applications.

Other Toradex Families
Better Optimized for ARM

Toradex’s other families are purpose-built for ARM systems, designed to operate within a precise power and performance range. This results in a system that is fine-tuned to a use case much closer to your needs.

Optimized for Scalability and Cost

Thanks to better optimization, our other families offer a superior value-to-cost ratio and lower indirect costs. For example, developing a carrier board for Verdin is much simpler than for SMARC.

Better HW/SW Compatibility

As part of our in-house standards, we guarantee true hardware and software compatibility within members of the same family. Easily scale up or down in performance without losing any work.

Toradex-Focused Standard

While Toradex SoM families are available off-the-shelf exclusively from Toradex, the form factor specification is open, allowing any company to manufacture pin-compatible modules and reduce vendor lock-in.
