Torizon

TorizonOne of the goals of Toradex is to provide our customers with stable, secure, and simple-to-maintain embedded Linux releases. With the announcement of the Long Term Support (LTS) from the Yocto Project, Toradex decided to align its releases with the Yocto Project LTS. We believe this will bring significant benefits to our customers. In this blog post, we will discuss our motivation and explain what changes these adjustments bring. To learn more about the announcement from the Yocto Project, please visit https://www.yoctoproject.org/yocto-project-long-term-support-announced/.

In April, we released the Toradex BSP Layers for Yocto Project 3.0.4. This is our latest production LTS release. It is based on Yocto Project 2.6 (Thud) with a 4.14 Linux kernel, https://www.toradex.com/news/embedded-linux-yocto-project-bsp-3-0-4-lts-for-imx-tk1-system-on-modules.

Yocto ParticipantSince then, we released monthly pre-releases of BSP 4.0, based on the Yocto Project 3.0 (Zeus). With the Yocto Project announcement of LTS, we decided to move as fast as possible to Yocto Project 3.1 LTS (Dunfell) without releasing any production versions of BSP 4.0. This allows us to align our roadmap and release schedule with the Yocto Project and provide our customers with releases faster and simplify their maintenance. With the move to the newer Yocto Project, we will also update the Linux Kernel to 5.4 LTS. This brings additional advantages, including better-accelerated machine learning on the NXP® i.MX 8 based products.

The first Toradex BSP Layers for Yocto Project 5.0 monthly release is planned in August with a first quarterly production release end of September.

TorizonWhat does this mean for Torizon releases? Torizon is our easy-to-use industrial-grade Linux platform. Torizon is built with the Toradex BSP Layers for Yocto Project, and will also skip a 4.0 production release. This means we will move the first quarterly production release of TorizonCore to the end of September 2020. You can start your development already today with the latest monthly release of Torizon. More at https://developer.toradex.com/software/torizon/release-details.

TorizonCore already uses mainline kernels on several System on Modules. With Torizon 5.0, we will have Linux Kernel 5.4 on all System on Modules. To learn more about the Torizon release roadmap and supported modules, see https://www.torizon.io.
