Powered by NXP®/Freescale Vybrid Processor: VF6xx Heterogeneous Multi-core

The Colibri VF61 is a SODIMM-sized computer module based on the NXP/Freescale Vybrid embedded System-on-Chip (SoC). The ARM Cortex-A5 CPU core peaks at 500 MHz and an additional M4 core runs at 167 MHz. The module delivers cost effective processing and graphics performance with minimal power consumption.

The NXP/Freescale VF6xx SoC possesses a heterogeneous/asymmetrical multi-core architecture. The two cores – ARM Cortex-A5 and ARM Cortex-M4 – can concurrently run different operating systems. This SoC architecture is ideal for applications with diverse real-time & mixed-criticality requirements in which the ARM Cortex-A5 runs a conventional OS such as Linux supporting UI and high throughput requirements while the ARM Cortex-M4 runs a RTOS for real-time tasks.

Traditionally, real-time and non-real-time requirements are often handled by separate processors on separate chips. Microcontrollers are often used for real-time tasks while microprocessors perform less time critical high-level tasks. Such an architecture has significant inter-chip communication over-head and suffers from duplicate resources & interfaces. In heterogeneous multi-core architectures, different processing cores are placed on a single silicon die. This allows the Colibri VF61 to provide a fast multi-core communication channel, inter-processor interrupts and shared resources and devices.

Heterogeneous Multi-core: Ideal for real-time Applications

The Colibri VF61 is ideal for simple Human Machine Interfaces (HMI) in appliances and industrial machines, secure control of infrastructure and manufacturing equipment, energy conversion applications (such as motor drives and power inverters), ruggedized wired and wireless connectivity, and control of mobile battery-operated systems such as robots and industrial vehicles. Due to the asymmetrical multi-core support, Colibri VF61 can be used in a variety of real-time applications.

Easy Performance Upgrade

Existing customers will benefit from an extremely easy migration path between the current Colibri iMX6, Colibri PXAxxx or Colibri Txx module range to the Colibri VF61 – all Colibri modules are electrically pin compatible. New customers will also appreciate the ability to select the Colibri module most suitable for their application to achieve the optimum price/performance balance without the need to support different carrier board designs.
