Der Colibri VF61 ist ein Computermodul in der Größe SODIMM, das auf dem NXP/Freescale Vybrid basiert, einem embedded System on Chip. Der Cortex A5 CPU Core unterstützt maximal 500 MHz, und ein zusätzlicher M4-Core läuft unter 167 MHz. Das Modul bietet eine hohe CPU- und Graphikleistung mit minimaler Stromaufnahme.

Der Vybrid VF6xx SoC verfügt über eine asymmetrische Multicore Architektur. Mit den beiden Cores, ein ARM Cortex-A5 und ein ARM Cortex-M4, können gleichzeitig verschiedene Betriebssysteme betrieben werden. Diese Architektur macht das SoC ideal für diverse Real-Time-Anwendungen, so kann zum Beispiel der ARM Cortex-A5 mit einem herkömmlichen OS wie Linux betrieben werden für das UI und für Anwendungen mit hoher Verarbeitungsrate, während auf der ARM Cortex-M4 ein RTOS für die Realtime-Aufgaben läuft.

Traditionsgemäss werden Real-Time und Non-Real-Time Aufgaben jeweils von separate Prozessoren auf verschidenen Chips verarbeitet. Mikrokontroller werden häufig für Real-Time Aufgaben gebraucht, während Mikroprozessoren für weniger zeitkritische Aufgaben zuständig sind. Eine solche Architektur verursacht einen erheblichen Overhead bei der Kommunikation zwischen den Chips und besteht zum Teil unnötigerweise aus doppelten Ressourcen & Interfaces. Bei einer heterogener Multi-Core Architektur sind verschiedene Cores auf einem einzigen Siliziumplättchen verbaut. Dies  ermöglicht dem Colibri VF61 eine schnelle Multi-Core Kommunikation, Inter-Prozessor Interrupts und gemeinsame Ressourcen und Geräte.

Heterogener Multi-Core: Ideal für Real-Time Anwendungen

Der Colibri VF61 ist ideal für simple Human Machine Interfaces (HMI) in Geräten und Industriemaschinen, für sichere Kontrolle der Infrastruktur und Fertigungsausrüstung, Anwendungen zur Energieumwandlung, wie beispielsweise Motorantriebe und Leistungsumrichter, robuste verdrahtete und drahtlose Konnektivität und Steuerung mobiler batteriebetriebener Systeme, wie beispielsweise von Robotern und Industriefahrzeugen. Aufgrund des asymmetrischen Multi-Core Supports kann der Colibri VF61 für viele verschiedene Real-Time Anwendungen verwendet werden.

Microsoft® Windows® Embedded Compact, früher bekannt als Windows CE, ist ein offenes, skalierbares, 32-bit Betriebssystem (OS), welches echtzeitfähig und äusserst stabil ist und erweiterte Windows Technologien zur Verfügung stellt.

Windows Embedded Compact ermöglicht es, eine weite Palette von innovativen Geräten mit kleinem Footprint zu entwickeln. Ein typisches Windows Embedded Compact basierendes Gerät ist meist für eine spezifische Anwendung konzipiert, kann einfach mit Netzwerken (z.B.
